when i add cabinets i keep getting a 1/2 space between
cabinets.
my feeling is that there is a setting somewhere that is causing this?

There isn't a setting for this. When placing cabinets with the click & drag feature it places then at the closest whole number. If your cabinets have fractional sizes you can disable the click & drag and enable the "Loaction assist" feature. This will place the next cabinet to the right of the previously created one.
