Concrete Countertops on 3/4" plywood boxes?
Post by romanekr on Nov 1st, 2009, 11:36am

We are considering installing concrete countertops and were wondering if 3/4" plywood boxes (solid tops) are strong enough or if additional bracing is necessary. If so, how do you reinforce it? Anyone have an opinion or experience with this?

I've never worked with concrete countertops but I would think they are about the same weightwise as granite. And I’ve never done anything special for granite other than adding extra supports under longer cabinets wherever there is a partition.

You shouldnt need to beef up anything. They get installed on standard cabinets all the time.

They do weigh considerably more than granite. Granite is usually 3/4" thick with a built up edge. Concrete is usually 1.5 to 2" thick.

A typical concrete countertop weighs about 140 lbs. per cubic foot. Most base cabinets aren't backed and may need some additional support. Better safe then sorry! Fu-Tung Cheng has a step by step book out called "Concrete Countertops" that's pretty informative, lots of great photos as well.
