stain over lacquer

I have a job and the customer wants and island black with the edges and corners sanded through and stained. I have been practicing on some scrap and when I stain the sanded edges etc. and wipe off the stain it leaves a "smear" on the black. I am just using a rag to stain with and to wipe off the stain. Is there a better way? How can you clean up the stain marks on the tinted part so I doesn't show after the clear coat?

What are you using for the black color? I'm wondering if the solvent in the stain isn't compatible with the the black color thus giving you the undesired results. I've stained over colors as well but with the same solvent base and haven't had problems. I hope you find a solution to this problem. Good luck!

I'm using ML Campbell's MagnaSand for the tinted black. It is a sanding sealer. That is what my paint dealer recommended for the black color. Good point about the solvents being incompatible. I am using ML Campbell wiping stain for the other.

I think the fact that the black is a sanding sealer is the answer to your problem and are therefore back to the incompatability issue. Let me know how it turns out...!

you were right on with the sanding sealer being a bit of a problem. turns out, just regular denatured alcohol will clean up the stain on the sealer and it looks good. thought I would let you know how it turned out.
