Stretchers and attach countertop

I am building some base cab's (not a professional) and would like some info on where to place the stretcher's. Is placing at top & bottom adequate or is there some other preference.
Somehow I have to put in something to attach the countertop to. How is that done? I've seen a brace that bridges each 90 at the top of the cab, is that the preferred way? Or do I put a piece from side to side along the top of the cab?
Where the sink is are there special considerations on what to do for the countertop?

Jack,
Stretchers can be put in both locations but most definitely at the top. Since this is the most common place to screw cabs to the walls, you'll want a "meaty" piece to do that with and to provide support. Depending on which method you're using, you might also want to place a shelf support strip under the "floor" of the cabinet.
As for the counter top mounts, you can put strips along the sides that run from front to back to create both a mount and support for the cabinet to keep it from racking.
Another option, and the one that I've used very successfully, is to use triangular gussets in each corner of the cabinets which again provide a counter mount and anti-racking support.
For the sink, I usually just cut out the piece that might be in the way since this cab is usually screwed to the neighboring ones which provides the necessary support.
