hI, new to cabinet building and design. My how to book says making FF stiles and rails thinner in some places can add to the appearance of my inset cabinets. He doesn't say anything about the relative width of the door frame stiles and rails. I was thinking of 1.75 on the FF and still going 2.0 on the doors. a partial mock up i made looks ok, but i am wondering what a whole wall would look like this way? Is there a rule of thumb? should the door stile width match the FF?
thanks Mike

I use 2" stiles and rails on my uppers-unless they go to the ceiling. On my lowers I use 2" stiles and rails except for the bottom--I use 1.5" rail. For my doors I use 2.5" for both stiles and rails. I build my doors a .25" oversize so I can trim them. To make my list work--in the specs I list them as 2.325" and build with 2.5 and add .25" to the length. For some styles you may use different sizes--especially if you want an "older" look.

A 2" stile and rail is what I use for my doors. This gives me a good reveal after routing any decorative edges around the doors. Anything less, in my opinion, makes the doors look too thin. Anything wider and the doors look too bulky.

If you're making a shaker stile door, then 2.5" would probably do the job for you.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

I use 2.25" stiles and rails on doors. I agree with Tony, anything thinner than 2" looks really thin when edge design is applied. I use 2.25" because... that is what the guy who taught me used. It looks nice and never had a reason to change it.
I use 1.5" stiles on cabinets because I like the look of less frace frame when looking at cabinets side by side, just my preference.

I don't use 2" stiles and rails for doors, not much room for cupped hinges. I use 2.5" rails because to save time I buy cabinet facing that is already milled up. It saves a lot of time, first I don't have to mill it up myself and the company that I get it from is really accurate so it saves on sanding time as well.
