1/4 inch skin on sides?
Post by BradB on Aug 18th, 2010, 5:45pm

Is there a way to have to program add a 1/4 inch skin on the finished side? I like to leave the reveal at 1/4 inch and then apply a skin to make it the finished side instead of using 3/4 plywood as the finished side. When i add a panel on the side it replaces the plywood with the panel. It would be great if the program would add the extra piece instead of me doing it manually. Hopefully you can understand what i am talking about. I can build cabinets, I'm just not good at explaining how i do it.

I havent found a way to do that yet. I build a lot of prefinished maple ply boxes and skin with 1/4 on the finished ends. Since those sizes are so easy to calculate, it hasnt been a problem for me to figure in the extra material.

The program doesn't really have a way to do this but you can still get the parts you need.

The first thing you need to do is set the Scribe to 1/4" on the side of the cabinet you want to add a skin to. This will get the basic cabinet parts the correct size.

Then open the General Standards and press the Add button for the Cabinet Material Names. All cabinet parts are all the same thickness but you can add the thickness to the material name to make the program separate the skins into a different material list. For an oak job you will want to enter a name like "1/4 Oak Skin".

Now you can create a 1/4" wide Base Filler with the depth set to 23 1/4" (the finshed size you need) and the face frame thickness set to zero. Then press the More button in the editing window and change the material to the "1/4 Oak Skin" that you created above.

The only problem with this is that the skins will be listed as "3/4 1/4 Oak Skin". It will look odd but at least the materials are separated on all the material lists and even in the panel optimizer.

HTH,
Rob
