xx End panels and Toe Kicks
« Thread started on: Dec 1st, 2009, 2:26pm »

I have a couple questions for you pro's.

One, when you make a panel to be used as a cabinet side how do you attach it? The first two cabinets I made the panel is the same depth as the cabinet. So I cut 3/4" off the panel and just butted the panel up to the faceframe. Pocket holes on the backside to join the face and panel, then installed the face and panel as one unit to the box.

Should I do it differently and 45* or use a 45* joint bit in the router, maybe that's why the panel is the same depth?

I like to have a panel stop at the toe kick height and the "toe kick" inset 3/4" on the end instead of running all the way to the floor.

Also I continue to have questions on the toe kicks, how do you make the panels on the sides of the toe kicks have the cut out for the toe kick in them? I saw the post about running the face frame to the floor on each end and I may do that. I thought about having the bottom rail 6" and cutting the toe kick out of it? Not sure how that would look.

I have a entire kitchen to build and did two bathrooms already, but I want to know how to do it before I get to the pieces everyone will see! So far everything is great but I can't land on a technique.

Maybe a few pictures of how you do end panels and toe kicks would help me a lot.

Ok I'll give it a go, but I am no pro.

On your 1st ? say the side panel will go on the right side of the cab. and the panel is 3/4 in raised panel side. I would build a the cab as you normally would and adjust the right scribe to 3/4 then secure the panel with scews from the inside thru the side to the panel or small brads or pins from the panel face to the side.

For toe kicks I plan on making a separate base or filler cab (on program look for filler under base cabinets). Make it the width of a particular cab or group of cabs say 20 in deep 4 in in height. Set toekick to (-.001), Location, Off floor to 0, From wall 0 (if its against a wall). To finish it apply wood to match the cabs.
Again I'm not a pro just my .02 ¢

I like to run my face frame to the floor anywhere there is an exposed end.
1- Because it makes it look more like furniture

2- Because I hate to see the notch and end grain on the toe kick

So with the full square side you have a nice place to end your toekick material.

Let me see if I can figure out how to post a pic to show you.

Also I do what you said by butting the finished panel to the faceframe and it turns out nice.

Hope thishelps a bit,
Nick

I always build the panel 3/4" less in depth with a 2 1/4" front style a 3" back style a 3 or 4" top rail and a 6 1/4" bottom rail. The tall bottom rail allows me to run the dado for the bottom in the bottom rail. I glue the panel to the face frame. For the toe kick I do a rounded notch in the front style being careful to stay out of the mortise and tenon joint. Grab whatever can is handy with about a 1 1/2" radius. Simply position the can at the bottom of the face frame, and draw a quarter circle on the style then drop the line straight down. The notch will be in front of the toe kick. Glue and nail a small block of wood on the inside of the panel, the correct depth for the toekick to be nailed onto. Since the toe kick sets back of the notch you do not see end grain. I have had several compliments on this design. Also an eye pleasing detail is to slightly taper the vertical cut toward the back of the cabinet, at the bottom of the cut.

On our cabinets the raised paneled end is part of the cabinet, instead of plywood I make a raised panel and dado it out just like the plywood. That way it doesn't look just added on and its part of the cabinet. As for toe kicks I have done both ways and the only problem with running the face fram to the floor is if the floor isn't perfectly level and you have to shim up your cabinet the you have a gap at your floor. There's not to many perfect house's out there you always have to shim or trim a little here and there, We mostly use base board for our toe kicks and just continue it around from the wall down the side of the cabinet and then the toekick tyhat way you have no end grain showing and if you had to shim thats covered to. Just how we do it. Jason

I know this isn't recent but I'll add my take on the subject.
I've made cabinets both with a stopped toe kick where the panel and frame runs to the floor and with an open notch.
The stopped toe kick does make for a "higher end" look and I will use it for such an application. End panels are attached to the end and to a 3/4" scribe.
However, I don't mind and often use the notched kick for a number of reasons. Primarily because a foot won't get caught if a person turns and sweeps across the toe kick, it doesn't provide a nice little pocket for dirt and debris to accumulate, and then the shimming issues mentiond above. As for exposed ends, a little stain or finish makes it acceptable.

Ultimately the application and customer preference will dictate.

When i have a situation of a finished panel or face frame going to the floor I leave the part long and usually don't install it until I'm on the job. DW fillers,Stiles that go to the floor, and finished end panels are much nicer when you can scribe them accurately to the floor.
